This movement can be one of the most challenging variations for Undulations AND shimmies.
In this series we’ll use this challenging step to learn how we can improve our entire Undulation and Shimmy family of movements through better body-awareness, strength, relaxation and coordination techniques.
The elements of this step are plentiful, and we’ll cover them all in this four-week series!
- Healthy Spinal Articulation and understanding the spine’s transitional zones
- Find the “perfect” spot for your body to contract for the lift based on several factors.
- Knowing when and how to release the hips for your shimmy
- Balance of strength and flexibility in both hemispheres of the body
- Coordination and timing of the lift and release
- Working simultaneously in two planes of movement
- The impact your feet, knees and inner thighs have on your confidence in this step
- How to find and maintain your body’s neutral posture for your fullest expression of movement
- Detailed technique to understand exactly how to find your ultimate movement
- Drills to reset and enhance new muscle memory
- Community time to reflect, ask questions and discuss the impact this series has on your dance

What You’ll Get:
The above elements are structured into four classes that build on each other to provide you with an efficient, effective and supportive growth experience:
Week One: Spinal Articulation and Fluidity: Understanding transitional zones and their impact on your movement, mobility and strength training for a healthy spine, finding THE “count one” for your individual spine and anatomical needs. Plenty of drills to help retrain your brain and body.
Week Two: Hip Release and Hip Health: Working through imbalances due to everyday posture, creating and maintaining a healthy low back to prevent soreness and discomfort, where and how to relax for your biggest, best, bouncy shimmy ever. Plenty of high energy drills to help retrain your brain and body.
Week Three: Putting it all together: Detailed technique, timing and coordination for the Rhythmic Undulation Shimmy, balancing techniques to create more fluid, confident and controlled movements, create distinct isolation for these layered movements. Traveling, balancing props and maintaining ease while doing it all.
Week Four: Kicking it up: Using all we’ve learned and exploring the impact on other movements such as the RUNSWAAT (formerly ASWAAT) including shimmying during the turn and the 1-2-3.

Class Information:
Live (Online) classes are Wednesdays November 9-30th at 11am Pacific.
Each class will be approximately 60-90 minutes.
